Gender

What is the impact of the gender roles that society creates and enforces?

Gender roles are based on norms, or standards, created by society. In the United States, 'masculine roles' are usually associated with strength, aggression, and being dominant, while 'feminine roles' are usually associated with passivity, nurturing, and being subordinate. The attitudes and expectations surrounding gender roles are typically based on, not any natural gender differences, but on stereotypes, or over-generalizations about  attitudes, traits, or behavior patterns of women or men. Gender stereotypes form the basis of sexism. "Sexism is the prejudiced beliefs that value one sex over another," says a psychologist from Rice University. Gender roles in our society create a sexist environment, where some men or some women do not feel comfortable being themselves or doing what they love. These people face discrimination, oppression, and violence for not going along with society's traditional gender roles. And this type of behavior caused by gender roles should not be acceptable.

  1. Alexa I thought this post did a fabulous job at summarizing your thoughts without unnecessary repetition, yet in a clear manner. Your inclusion of a quote from a credible source also makes your post come off as more "logic based" rather than emotional. Also, your description of masculine and feminine roles was extremely accurate, in my opinion, because I had been trying to find the words to say exactly that for two weeks.

  2. Although I do not agree with the opinion you gave at the end, your post still did the job of describing the impact of the gender roles that society creates and enforces. Awesome job for using outside sources and describing everything in small detail. Your writing is improving a lot.

  3. Well lets recap, and in no way am I trying to be offensive, but in the past half century or so the world has become much more tolerant towards African Americans, Women, and the LGBT community. Women's rights will come, just as winter comes. It is to be expected and shows that their is hope for our evolving society. If mankind (or womankind, not being sexist here) has the ability to transcend its physical, mental, and psychological programming, and accept that women are different but must be equal, then anything is possible.
