Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), sometimes called Lou Gehrig's disease, is a rapidly progressive, usually fatal neurological disease that attacks the body's neurons which are responsible for controlling voluntary muscles movments. Eventually, all muscles under voluntary control are affected, and individuals lose their strength ability to move arms, legs, and the rest of the body. Most people with ALS die from respiratory failure, usually within three to five years. However, about 10 percent survive for 10 or more years.
Donations from the Ice Bucket Challenge reached over $100 million this Friday. People all around the world are dumping buckets of ice on their heads and donating to the ALS Association to help raise awareness and help people combat the Lou Gehrig’s disease. This year the ALS Association raised $100 million in donations which came from more than 3 million donors who have contributed when seeing the ALS Ice Bucket challenge that became viral in late July of 2014. The ALS Association raised only $2.8 million in the same period last year which is a huge difference.
“The word gratitude doesn’t do enough to express what we are feeling right now,” said the ALS Association's President and CEO, Barbara Newhouse (Worland 1).
The Ice Bucket Challenge has been a phenomenon on many different social networks like on Facebook, Instagram, and etc. It grabbed many people's attention including many celebrities and political figures. The idea of getting people involved with a fun way has forever changed the way charities approach fundraising. The ALS Association has committed to find effective treatments with these donations and find a cure for Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Their research effort has increased the number of scientists working on ALS who have advanced with new discoveries and treatments.
