Dr. Crozier, a 44-year old doctor, ended up being diagnosed with the disease in Sierra Leone. He spent his time treating Ebola patients in a governmental hospital in Kenema. He was evacuated to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta on Sept. 9. Dr. Crozier ended up being the third American with Ebola. He was airlifted from West Africa. He had a long, painful illness. Within days of the first symptom, which was just a headache, the patient started fighting for his life. 40 days in the hospital and requested to keep his identity a secret to protect his family's privacy. His doctors and his family feared he might sustain brain damage or die. However, Dr. Crozier was able to stay strong and fight the disease. "Doctors say his recovery has taught them that aggressive treatments, even life-support measures like ventilators and dialysis machines, can save some Ebola patients," (Grandy, 1). Dr. Crozier has done so much good in his life. He was always traveled to Africa living in Uganda. There he treated patients with H.I.V. and trained doctors at the Infectious Diseases Institute in Kampala, especially when Ebola broke out in West Africa. He was always there to help. “Ian was by far the sickest patient with Ebola virus that we’ve cared for at Emory,” said Dr. Jay B. Varkey, an infectious-disease specialist. As a doctor in Africa, Dr. Crozier has explained how there were often 60 to 80 patients who suspected and eventually were confirmed with having infectious diseases, from all over the country. They arrived day and night. "A patient might lie in one bed and a corpse in the next, waiting to be disinfected, bagged and taken away," (Grady, 1). It is a sad picture to imagine, however Dr. Crozier has stuck through it all. He helped in every way possible. He eventually ended being a survivor of an infectious disease.
