On September 28, 2014, hundreds of gay, lesbian, bisexual and even transsexual citizens not only from Serbia but also from different countries like Yugoslavia, Italy, Greece, Germany and Canada, marched their way through the empty streets of Belgrade, for the first time since 2010. Four years later and they were still protesting for their rights. They want for greater tolerance, equal rights and the right to civil partnerships just like every other gay, lesbian, etc across the world whose rights have been taken away from them.
The event was called Pride 2014 and it was a week-long festival full of parties, films and debates. This festival showed Belgrade to be a place where gays and lesbians aspire the level of acceptance found in the other parts of the world, even by remaining a part of Christian Orthodox society. Christian Orthodox still generally opposes homosexuality. Until today, politicians do not seem ready or willing to change that.
However, about 5,000 police officers were there to control the crowd. There was five policemen for every participant of the march. People who were there to show their support, remarked that they have never seen so much security at a gay pride parade before. Visitors from all over the world have said that they have came specifically because they have heard the situation for gays in Serbia and they knew how bad it was. Some things are the same at gay pride parades everywhere. For example, they had a lot of rainbow flags, colorful balloons, music pumping from the sound systems. Everyone was singing, dancing, enjoying themselves while making a point to the world. However, it seemed unusual with the amount of security that showed up to keep the peaceful protest under control.
