On August 23, 2014, a crime took place in the streets of Kabul, Afghanistan. Four couples were driving in a car from the capital of Afghanistan to their province returning from a wedding, when their car was stopped. The people stopping their car were 10 men of which some were dressed in police uniforms and carrying assault weapons. These men forced the women to come out of the car. They robbed the women, beat them, then eventually raped them. After using such force, they sent them back to their husbands who were humiliated and could not stop them. Seven of the ten men have been caught while the other three have been identified. The police said they had allegedly stolen the uniforms and were not real officers.
Over the next four days, the attorney general investigated and announced his findings. The confessions of the seven men were broadcasted on television. Also, the rape victims, dressed in burqas and chadors, had authority to confront the accused attackers in person and on camera. The women grabbed them by the lapels and showed their hatred.
While the president of Afghanistan generally opposes the death penalty, Mr. Karzai was ready to make an exeption for the seven men in this case. “I told them to arrest these people, and I expect the chief justice will give them capital punishment,” he said. “And by God’s willingness, we will implement it immediately,” (Nordland 1). This Sunday, the seven men were sentenced to the death penalty as their punishment.
"Heather Barr, a Human Rights Watch researcher on women’s rights in Asia, noted that in many rape cases in Afghanistan, the government often jails the victim for adultery rather than arresting the rapist (Nordlord 1)." This crime had a fair punishment and the criminals got what they deserved. It is about time the authorities in Afghanistan tried to make a change and protect the rights of women victims.

  1. Wonderful blog post Alexa! This is a serious topic to address and I could not have agreed more with the capital punishment on these people who did such a terrible thing and raped these innocent women. This was an awesome article post and I sincerely hope justice is definitely served!

  2. Such a horrible event. It is sad that this is becoming normal in Afghanistan. It was important that you said the president finally made the right decision. Those people destroyed the lives of the women they raped and therefore should face their consequences. The words you used in the blog set the tone and prepared me for what was to come.

  3. Wow. It sickens me to hear stories like this. All men who have attempted to or raped any woman or even some cases man, should be caught and looked away right away. The death sentence is not always the right answer to these crimes, but life in prison will surely set a strong example for others who consider rape to be an acceptable act. Other than that, excellent blog post!

  4. A truly unfortunate incident. Although I do not entirely agree with the capital punishment sentence, I am glad to hear that the true suspects are being punished rather than the women. Very informative and interesting read.

  5. Alexa you brought a serious topic to my attention. It seems as though women are still being treated unfairly all around the world in our present day and I am proud to hear that they are being severely punished. I think the death penalty is the appropriate way for the men to be punished and you made that clear. Wonderful job on your entire blog! You wrote about this important topic and summarized the pain you felt when you heard this news. Keep it up!

  6. Lexi your review on this topic helped open my eyes to the tragedies and calamities that are taking place all over the world. I only wish there was an answer that could solve the world’s problems and bring peace to the people. It is another wish of mine to not see women treated like how they are today. We are all equals and should not be judged by our gender, race, or color. I am truly pleased that you chose such a topic.
