Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), sometimes called Lou Gehrig's disease, is a rapidly progressive, usually fatal neurological disease that attacks the body's neurons which are responsible for controlling voluntary muscles movments. Eventually, all muscles under voluntary control are affected, and individuals lose their strength ability to move arms, legs, and the rest of the body. Most people with ALS die from respiratory failure, usually within three to five years. However, about 10 percent survive for 10 or more years.
Donations from the Ice Bucket Challenge reached over $100 million this Friday. People all around the world are dumping buckets of ice on their heads and donating to the ALS Association to help raise awareness and help people combat the Lou Gehrig’s disease. This year the ALS Association raised $100 million in donations which came from more than 3 million donors who have contributed when seeing the ALS Ice Bucket challenge that became viral in late July of 2014. The ALS Association raised only $2.8 million in the same period last year which is a huge difference.
“The word gratitude doesn’t do enough to express what we are feeling right now,” said the ALS Association's President and CEO, Barbara Newhouse (Worland 1).
The Ice Bucket Challenge has been a phenomenon on many different social networks like on Facebook, Instagram, and etc. It grabbed many people's attention including many celebrities and political figures. The idea of getting people involved with a fun way has forever changed the way charities approach fundraising. The ALS Association has committed to find effective treatments with these donations and find a cure for Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Their research effort has increased the number of scientists working on ALS who have advanced with new discoveries and treatments.

  1. I really liked your choice of topic. You gave specific and detailed points on ALS. I love how your brief explanation of the article uses the appeal pathos because it helped captivate my ultimate attention and keep it throughout the post. I did not even realize that your post was over until I reached the comments section. I would specifically like to point out the way you explained the article's importance. Nice work, Alexa!

  2. Dear Alexa, I am glad you chose a topic most people have heard about and a topic that many people are posting about on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. I understand that the challenge is to raise awareness for ALS but i do not agree with the amounts of water that is being wasted just so people can post their videos on social networking websites. The world is almost in a drought and this bucket challenge does not ameliorate the problems that future generations will have to face with water. People should conserve water and think of other ways to do this challenge rather than waste countless gallons of water all for an Instagram post.

  3. What a popular article to target, astonishing job Alexa! Your diction and syntax was grand. I myself have done this challenge to raise awareness and I think the idea for doing the ice bucket challenge was creative. This outside of the box idea worked, just topping 100 million dollars of donations and scientists have found new treatments and discoveries.

  5. You picked a fun topic to write about. I like how you structured your post, starting off with a description of the disease and heading into the Ice Bucket Challenge. You placed your quote appropriately to finish the second paragraph. The way you expanded on the phenomenon of the challenge at the end was pleasing.

  6. I like the topic you picked because of how popular it is today. You defined ALS in an excellent way because you stated what ALS stands for and what damages the disease does to your body. The blog has a lot of detail and enough information about the topic. Nice job!

  7. Alexa your work is rather extraordinary! I adored your post and kept reading it over and over again because it was simply marvelous. Your words were able to grasp my attention throughout the whole thing, not once relaxing its grip on me. I am pleased that you were able to describe ALS in such a simple way. It was neither extremely long nor too informative. Your choice for a topic could not have been more impeccable and from now on I will always wait for your next post, knowing that it will be greater than the last.
